Vale Merle Heselwood – 22.10.2016

Merle Heselwood first joined East Geelong between 1968 and 1972.

Merle loved East Geelong Golf Club and in her time at the club, won the Club Championships 8 times, as well as numerous board events. She played pennant for East for many years, with pennant flag success.

She was a member of the SWDLGA Committee and was Handicapper from 1981- 1986

Merle’s golfing prowess was rewarded with three District Championships, in 1971, 1975 & 1977. And won Country Teams Day in 1981

She was selected for Country Teams representation for many years and had success, being a part of winnings teams in 1973 & 1977.

With her husbands work meaning they moved around the country, Merle would still play golf and gain memberships wherever they were, but her heart was still at East Geelong.

It was whilst in Adelaide and a member at The Grange, that Merle thought she wanted to be remembered at her club that she loved and had given to her, so much enjoyment.

She contacted the Ladies Committee and offered up a trophy in her name, which she supplied, to be awarded to the player with the most improved handicap for the year.

Merle had the best looking swing and game and she was always encouraging players to improve their game.
This trophy encouraged and rewarded players for improving their handicaps.

With changes to the Handicap system over the years, the method of criteria was adjusted to suit, but the basis remained the same.

Merle and her husband, Tom, moved back to Geelong and she once again became a valued member of her favourite club. Her husband Tom, was a General Committee member for many years also.

This was their final move and they remained in Geelong and at East for many years, only ceasing membership when her health was deteriorating.

There was a time when East had a piano in the clubhouse and Merle could be heard on many occasion, belting out tunes, without sheet music. Anyone could ask her to play a song, even if they hummed only a bit, she could play the whole song from her head. She was the life of any party.

She loved the piano, almost as much as golf and East Geelong.

Merle Heselwood will always be remembered.

Merle's Funeral is to be held on Friday 28 October at 1.30 at Jonathan Hepner's- 199 Ormond Road East Geelong. Prior to a Private Cremation
